As the weather cools and fall foliage reaches peak season, there’s no better time for bike fishing in West Virginia. Whether gravel-grinding on back roads, or stump-jumping on single tracks, bring a pole and stop at the nearest honey hole.
This past weekend we did just that – bike fish along the Blackwater River in Canaan’s Wildlife Management Area. The Blackwater Bicycle Association does an excellent job of maintaining trails, hosting events, and engaging the community. It’s a great place to get beta from the local bike shop and ride trails close to the river.
We stopped at Blackwater Bikes in Davis, WV late Saturday morning and rented their new 2018 Santa Cruz Chameleon’s. It’s a rugged all-purpose hard tail that served our purpose well. We chatted about the bikes and plotted our ride on the map. I intended to catch fish, so we found a route close to the river.
By noon we threw back a shot of banana moonshine and headed out. The weather was prefect, mild and not too hot. We rode from Blackwater Bikes directly to the trail.
We were enamored by the color of the foliage once we hit Beaver Creek Trail. It was a mix of cinnamon reds and golden yellows – hypnotic.
An early frost had already brought fall colors, a dramatic contrast between these parts and the rest of the state.
Soon we found ourselves on the banks of the Blackwater River at the head of Camp 70 trail. We explored a few spots along the river were visitors had camped the night before – some with people still camping. I began casting the bank. It was shallow, with slow moving water in parts.
We continued to ride along the river and found moving water and downed trees that seemed like good fish cover.
We ate our lunch and lounged on the banks of the river for a while, eventually catching few Rock bass and a Smallmouth.
Mission accomplished! The ride on Camp 70 Road back to Davis was quick and easy. By late afternoon we made it back to Blackwater Bikes, and rounded-out our afternoon adventure with a token burrito at Hellbender Burrito.
With the Leaf Peepers Festival this weekend, and the WV DNR’s two trout stockings scheduled for October, there’s no better time to try bike fishing in Tucker County. Get your fishing license, travel to Davis, and bike fish along the Blackwater River while the fall foliage is in peak season.
